used engine install
used engine install
I just bought a used 5.4 for my 99' F150 4X4. My current engine has a blown head gasket. Anyway, I was able to hear the engine run before I bought it, and was able to check it out some. (oil, anti-freeze, bla bla) I was told that this engine was bought from a salvage yard with 50K, and 50K more put on it before I bought it.
I was also told that the intake manifold is newer, from Autozone, and it has newer Accell coils.
My question for you all, is ..... What do YOU think I should do otherwise before I install this engine. Oil pump? water pump? seals? ...
Thanks for any advice in advance!

If your engine only has a blown head gasket and you know it's good otherwise, repair your engine instead of replacing with an unkown and find you have to repair that one a little later.
Keep the replacment as a spare if you are tending to keep the truck a lot longer.
Otherwise to many unknowns for others to make a worthwhile judgement about.
Good luck.

How long has it sat with blown head gaskets? You leave it sit along time you can have issues with cylinder rust and other areas. How many miles on your engine? I would do a head gasket repair on your engine. But I have skills so it's not a big deal for me. Someone that is not real advanced it could be a problem! You have to take stuff off. Place in order on the floor. Use baggies to hold all the fasteners for each part. Take pictures and notes on what goes where. Replace seals and such as you reassemble. The heads need to be gone over by a shop. Putting in the used engine is not as easy as you think. It also has issues and problems. Hopefully someone that knows what he's doing can help you. A case of beer is a good starting bribe. Then offer some money to help. Bribe with a good bottle my help too. But not while the job is being done!
