well my alternator is kapoot, is there one off a different year truck that puts out more power and bolts right up to my good ole 351? or just go out and get a new one? and there any new ones that put out more power that are decently priced?
The difference is in the output. Old stock 2G: 65amps, 3G :130amps. really easy swap. Here is my thread I made when I did the swap. Not the most organized but all of the info is there: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...doing-one.html
That is all on a 351W.
Oh and to answer before even asked, here is the list of cars you can take the alternator from: 93-99 narrow-eared non-DOHC Taurus
94-95 V8 Mustang
94-00 V6 Mustang
94-97 V6 T-Bird/Cougar
95-98 Windstar
91-94 V6 Lincoln Continental.
thanks evan, now to visit my local LKQ and get me one, along with a new battery haha so it just bolts right up and the wires plug right in? sorry my computers to slow to load the links to see
i knew i joined this forum for a dang good reason haha thanks guys, this outa be a breeze with all this info at hand, lets just pray i got the money for this... time to get back to tree trimming
I would be very surprised if you spend more than $100 for real !!! I paid $40 for mmy 95 Mustang alt and less than $20 for wiring ... If you need a serp belt ...mmm $20 to $25 if your old belt fits use it !!!
When you're at the JY try to pick the nicest alt you can find ... ask if it's bad will they give you another one ... Autozone, O'Rielllys and others will bench test it for free and double check it too !!!!
Not too expensive. Here is my parts list for the swap:
1. 3G Alt from 98 Taurus - $32
2. Regulator plug from Taurus(optional, but preferred) - $3
3. 3ft 2 gauge cable(NAPA sells by the foot) - $12 -->NAPA
4. 14 gauge green(color optional) wire for regulator plug extension - $3-$5 -->Home Depot
5. One ring terminal for regulator plug to alternator body connection - box of 20 for $2 - Harbor Freight
6. 4 ring terminals for 2 gauge wire - $5 -->BI-MART
7. Solder(pellets work better) - $4 -->Harbor Freight
8. Heat shrink - $3-$5
9. 175A MEGA Fuse - $6 -->(Can be taken from alternator donor car) -->NAPA
10. MEGA Fuse holder - $12 from NAPA
Total: ~$75 (What I spent)
Part number's for fuse and holder from NAPA:
Fuse: BK 7821139
Holder: BK 7821143
Evan I kinda figured you would jump in and help that youngen too I like you almost famous link ...kinda everything in one place. Hope you don't mind I bookmarked it too.
My alt is doing just fine I hope yours is also !!!
Yeah no problem. Glad it was helpful. One of these days if I have some free time I will go and post a clean How-To on that thread to make it clear with all the info needed for anyone to do it. And my swap if holding out great, no issues at all
There are 2 kinds of 3G alternators, the 95A and the 130A, the one in Evan's pic is a 130A unit, the 95A unit will have 4 holes between the 2 nerves you can see in the front of the case instead of 2 holes.
