trans flush

What is the average cost of a transmission flush at the dealership? Also, where is this external filter everyone talks about. I stared at the bottom of my transmission for over an hour during my exhaust install and didn't see a filter anywhere. Thanks in advance.

I am going to say the average is around 160. The filter is behind the front bumper just left of center if looking at it from the front. Passenger side. Silver looking cannister with built in hex on the bottom.

Well that would explain why I couldn't find it

Is there any reason I should let the dealer change the filter? Do I need a special tool, will I lose a lot of fluid when I remove the old one, etc.

You lose app. 8 oz. changing the filter. Much cheaper to buy it online and change it yourself. Dieselfiltersonline.com. Manf. is NTZ.

Yea, $300 for my flush with Mercon SP at dealer, but pricing may vary for different kinds of fluid.

The price seems to vary quite a bit. I couldn't see paying more than $200, but if that's what my dealer says I guess I have no choice

Internal filter does not need replacing unless rebuilding the tranny. To do so is throwing money away.

Stealhead 2,
Yeah, I just drained the new fluid into a real clean bucket. Dropped the pan and then refilled with same fluid. Internal filter had flecks and specks. Took appx an hour. I will probably do the same again at 100K miles . At 67K now. Peace of mind. Be advised to double check that the seal on the old filter comes out too. Internal cheaper than external one. Go figure.
