After properly installing T19 shift boot mechanism

I've notice a substantial reduction of jumping around in 1st gear and much smoother shifts. I thought for sure my carrier bearing was going bad. Why would the shift boot mechanism fix this? I'm talking about the part you screw down over the cap and spring just under the shift boot. Coincidence?

that definately seems to be a coincidence, and/or the "nicer" feel of things influences the operator to be a little smoother in his actions.

That's highly likely. I've noticed a significant amount of noise reduction from the transmission as well. Probably due to the fact that the cover isn't rattling around during operation.

Is there a special tool to tighten or loosen the cover nut I spoke of? I used channel locks and it did the trick, but I didn't want to go too tight or mar the housing.
