Back up Camera?

Anyone have an aftermarket back up camera? They seem to be getting cheaper now. I don't have any fancy radio and don't want some add on screen. I was thinking about a set up that comes with a new rear view mirror and displays the picture there. Anyone have any experience or input on these?

I have a gentex, same company that makes the factory mirrors. These are not cheap, but awesome when backing up to anything

Where did you get it? I added a Gentex mirror to my truck years ago to get the outside air temp and compass reading. I'm guessing this is a fleabay item?

I think i got it @ JC Whitney or Amazon , you buy the camera separately & its auto dimming If you buy one, id recommend the larger screen size.Amazon.com: Gentex GENK242 Auto dimming mirror with rear camera display: Automotive

I have an OEM 2009 F-150 mirror in my truck, and 2010 F-150 tailgate camera. Works/looks factory, and with it in the rearview mirror, it's easy to use while backing up

My Flex has the display on the dash and I can't stand that thing because it's not a natural view zone while backing up...or just driving IMO

The F-150 mirror will work with any camera. Just a +/- RCA input for wiring. It's triggered off the reverse wire.

Oh yeah, less than $300 using factory components (gentex). eBay has the mirror for $150-200. Check out seller "nailsandsales". Hardest part of the install was custom wiring a connector

Tylus, thats a nice set up! The image/screen in the mirror is the best way to go. You wont be looking down/around/back & forth for the other screen! The gentex has a 2 1/4 by 2 3/4 inch screen & the mirror is an inch larger that my stock mirror.

Thanks Stewart, but if my wife or daughter is going to be driving this thing, looking down to back up just means there's going to be trouble.

Can you give me a size of the picture in the mirror? I'm thinking the bigger the better, so it would be nice to know how large each picture is.

I like the idea of an over-sized mirror and screen. Thanks for the link above.

No worries. I know my setup didn't fit within the criteria you posted in your initial query, but I figured I'd throw it out there anyway.

I'm subscribing.

I may need to replace my mirror soon because whatever holds the fluid within the mirror seems to have busted. Part of the mirror is regular and the other part looks like the cloudiness that mirrors in bathrooms sometimes get.

I'm interested in this as well but I also like the idea of being able to switch between two cameras. One in front and one in back. I've got backup sensors and mirrors to help to the rear but nothing but judgement and OLD eyes for the front.

I'm looking to do a front camera as well. The front on these beasts is challenging when trying to shoehorn it into San Francisco parking spots!

Right now, I have the backup camera displaying on my Pioneer AVIC 7" head unit's display. Once I get the front camera, I'll likely move the backup camera to the rear-view mirror and connect the front camera to the Pioneer.

it's about the size of my iPhone screen. I'll try to get actual measurements tomorrow for you.

The F-150 "Ford logo/emblem" camera is also the same size as the grille emblem. In the future, I plan on buying another one and installing it into the front grille for parking. Then a simple toggle switch and I can swap between the 2 cameras for backing up, or pulling into spots

I'm liking the same idea... one thing we will need to address... the power for the camera(s). The rear camera normally get's a signal from reverse (reverse lights?) but there would need to be something to power the camera(s) when going forward. Possibly just a toggle switch. Then the rear camera could work when driving forward if needed.
