Atlas 40 ficm mpg

Just back from a 950 mile round trip towing a 6 by 10 ft enclosed trailer.
Empty trailer(1.5k lbs?) with matt's slr+ tune & atlas 40 15.60 mpg. Loaded trailer(3.0k lbs?) matt's 8k tow tune & atlas 40 13.70 mpg. Mostly flat from twin cities to bloomington/normal IL. I think my mpg is up about 1 with the addition of the atlas 40 tune, with thanks from ed@fcimrepair.com

I don't know how you guys do it. Even after my PCM rollback and adding the atlas 40 I haven't picked up more than .5mpg, which is probably me just extra babying it trying to get more out of it. The stupid thig barely got 16 when it was on stock 31.5" AT tires, so I guess -2mpg for the MTs and Ranch Hand isn't bad. With everything it has now, breaking 15 is like winning the lottery. 14.5 avg over three tanks for me so far.

Bill didn't lie, it's a great mild tune and I'm happy with it on the power side, I'm just stuck in "Sucksville: population me" for MPGs still.

How much does a full tank of fuel last you?

I have the same model year truck as you on bone stock LT275/70R17s with a 3.73. I get barely 500 kms. (if I see that much even), before I have to refuel which costs me between $115 to $130 (fuel in my neck of the woods has been between $1.25 to $1.30 per litre). I know one of you smart Americans will be capable of coverting the litres to gallons and kms. to miles to compare to what you guys are getting.

425-450 miles highway, 350 miles mixed, with fills taking between 30-32 gallons (to the neck, 27 gallons to the first click, I've got the short bed tank). I've never broken 500 miles on a tank.

500km is about 310 miles. You might be worse than me, so welcome to Sucksville. We should start a club and call the 20mpg people liars to make us feel better.

That's about how I feel. I have wrenched on LOTS of these trucks and I just don't get how these owners are claiming 20 mpgs. I have to admit, I am a little bit of a lead foot, but that's only because I know that driving it like a granny driver isn't good for these trucks.

Ok, here is what has happened to me.

13.7 mpg is the best I have gotten for months.(hand calculated or lie-o-meter didn't matter) I kept reading about folks getting higher MPGs than that highway. Most of my drive every day to work is 28 miles one way. A couple miles at 35 MPH. Then about 20 miles at 60+ then 5 miles or so gong from 50 down to 40. I hated it.

So, I know my FICM is struggling. Only bad reading was in the mornings. 39v KOEO then 10 seconds later 48v. This went on for a while. Finally it got to 30v KOEO then about 14 seconds to get to 48v. I never started my truck until it reached 48v. Once engine was warm, volts always read 47.5-48v.

Just sent my FICM to Ed for a repair (had to make it to my vacation to do this) this week. I also took out the turbo to clean (as you know what happened with that Mike)

So, I got the FICM back, with the Atlas 40, and, I put in a new Powermax turbo.

Just took a trip of 180 miles. (mixed 55 mph to 70 mph) According to the lie-o-meter, I got 17.1. My lie-o-meter hasn't seen these numbers in a very long time. I have yet to hand calculate, but when I do, I will post my mileage.

Other than the above, I'm stock. I run 35's x 18's for rubber.

So, was it the addition of the extras? Or getting the FICM fixed?

I do not know. But, if the lie-o-meter is even close, I'm going to be a happy camper!!

By the way, the turbo was very dirty, and my VGT% would always peg 85% at every stop. And, when I opened up the turbo, I had to twist the unison ring pretty hard to get it to close all the way, seemed to be stuck in a mid way position.

I also noticed during the bad MPG, my boost was almost always at 9.5

So, that's what I'm experiencing today. For what it's worth.

My belief? I think the FICM can be having issues that we can't see, but is effecting our MPGs.

I received a rebuilt FICM from Ed and installed it second week of Jan 2012. It is not php tuned and I don't have any other tunes.

On Sept 20, 2011 I filled up the tank and was at 226,471 on odometer.
On Jan 06, 2012 I filled up again and was at 238,585 on odometer.
In between all that I bought 738.112 gallons.
For 12,114 miles that works out to be 16.412 mpg.

On Mar 30, 2012 I filled up again and was at 244,813 on odometer.
In between all that I bought 369.061 gallons.
For 6,228 miles that works out to be 16.875 mpg.

I've run those calcs before and I've always been around the 16.7 - 16.9 range, so the dip into the 16.4 range is definitely different. Maybe that was a result of the FICM beginning to have issues, and repairing the FICM just got me my 0.5 mpg back?

My mpg went down 1-2 mpg when i installed the power-max & tuning. To see an average for any car/truck go to fuelly.com & search your truck & filter the engine type. The meter was accurate on the way down, i didn't reset on the way up but it was showing 16 mpg @ 70 mph.

I got my truck back from the shop, had new heads, arp studs, glow plug harness, t-stat,sinister egr delete,(prior I had the block off) new turbo center section,..Before going to shop I just installed Ed's 3 yr.with Atlas 40.
Three years ago I could get around 15 mpg. normal driving and towing heavy. It slowly went down to 9-11 mpg. After the atlas 40 only, it jumped up to something like 16-17 on lie O meter, ( 70 mile drive) Now coming home it is anywhere from 19.7 21.3 mpg. on the lie O meter...And the fuel gauge has hardly moved compared to past driving..
I am excited for these numbers. But the power is wowwwww.. Same as amdriviven2liv..my boost would be around 9-11 pds. for 65-75 mph. now it is 2-5 pds. for same..
I also have the front bumper and push bar/winch off the truck so there is a minus 300 lbs..( mechanic removes motor out the front of truck so I took it off ahead of time and cleared all the wiring). It all goes back on tommorrow and I hand calculate so will give true number updates soon. Also going to install the canned STC SF3 tunes and see what happens there.
I use to doubt all the higher mileage reports too. And I am really hoping mine are for real...Maybe I should take a picture of the Lie O meter just for the "once upon a time I did see"......
Also my deltas have dropped to the 4-5 degree range..I think it is due to the flow restriction in my old egr cooler...It was pretty scaled up inside the water jacket....was hoping for 2-3 as some posts but I will take any improvement I can get.....

Redlang, i would consider that great mpg for the load you were towing. The best for me was 18 mpg to branson mo, all free/highway before power max, with a 120 hp tune from inovative...

Make it Suckville population 3. I have been dealing with someleaking injecotors for a while. I couldnt get the dealer to fix it they kept saying it smoked becuase of my intercooler. Last time it was in they pulled the turbo for like the 5th time, put another center section on it and it made no difference.

So now that its out of warranty, I ordered a set of 175cc injectors, a power max, and I will send my FICM out for the Atlas 40 tune as well. I didnt buy the truck to be a fuel sipper, but my lie o meter say 9.9-10.2 all the time and its pretty accurate.

After the upgrades and updated tuning from Matt I hope to move out of your town...no offense.

Count me as a resident of Suckville, too.

I've never broken 500 miles on a tank, and am hard pressed to break 400. Stock wheels/tires. I can get 450 if I run the freeway with the cruise set at 65 and getting down to the low-fuel warning.

I know people get tired of hearing me say this, but Ford completely neutered the late-build '06's and '07's -- basically anything past about a May build date on the engines. (yes, I can hear the collective eye roll as I type this.... )

Mostly to make the bean counters and the EPA happy. It's the whole reason for the '07's hideous throttle lag and poor mileage. MOST of this (but not all) is cured by rolling back the FICM.

Now that people are beginning to report good results with the Atlas 40, now I have to figure out a way to get the FICM out of the truck and sent to Ed...
