Anyone have experience replacing the vent window glass?
I've got new glass, and the "tape" (From mid-fifty) but no instructions.
I assume (always dangerous) that I fold the tape around the edge of the glass and then "simply insert" the glass into the frame... The simply insert part worries me....
i have been thinking about this too.i think the sealer might work better but do not know for sure....somebody please help us out with some info..seems that i have to do everthing about 3 times to get it right..good luck
Back a thousand years ago when I was an apprentice I learned to install glass by soaking the tape in varsol for a couple of minutes , fold over edge of glass and it would slide right into channel .
I just finished doing this myself a couple days ago in my F3. I simply fit the tape into the frame using a 1/4 inch drive extension (careful not to press to hard since it will puncture the rubber), then I simply slid the glass into the channel. To get a snug fit, I had to tap softly on the upper and lower edges of the glass with a rubber mallet until it fit into the proper position. No, it didn't even scuff the glass work. It worked great and now I'm done installing all the windows in the truck.
I learned the same technique as Oldmerc. The tape was a fabric saturated with a tar like mastic substance. You activate the mastic by dunking it in solvent. While it was wet it was quite slippery. After drying overnite you would trim off the excess with a razor blade. If you have a rubber gasket I'd lube it with a soap solution and install it by tapping into place. You could give MF a call and ask how to use the material you have.
I'd use some sort of adhesive if it was me. If you can pull it out with your hand, it may well vibrate as you rattle down the highway. I used the butyl rubber sealant and the "tape" that is used for installing windshields. I kind of wish I hadn't used the tape as I wish the vent windows seated a little deeper. I haven't had it out on the road yet, so I can't vouch for this method.
I rebuilt some but couldn't get the thick tape to work so i got some black gasket stuff and put it in the grove installed the glass and let it sit for afew days then cut the gasket stuff to make a clean look. JUST my 2 cent !!!! Key to doing this is let it dry before trying to clean it up !!!!!
