who else regularly does 80+ mph in their truck? i know its dangerous and illegal, but sometimes the flow of traffic is just at that speed. my truck seems to do 80 nicer than it does 60. maybe my 2.73 rear end has something to do with it, but my old half ton feels right at home at 80 mph. albeit ive probably replaced every single front end part since i have owned the truck. actually, ive definitely replaced every front end part. that combined with new tires, and it floats down the road like an unabused cadillac.
Top speed in my '90 is about 65. That puts the 302 at 3000rpm with the t18 and 3.50 gears.
It really doesn't go any faster than that? My F250 tops out at 105 in 4th gear (351w NP435 with 3.55 gears) and it only has an aftermarket exhaust and is jacked up to boot. And at that point I'm at about 3900 rpms with the pedal to the boards.
Yeah, mine'll do it, but it's noisy and just sounds painful. 3.55s in mine.
I drive my truck like an old man. Max that I cruise at is 75, and that's rare. I'm usually perfectly happy doing 65ish in the slow lane. When I feel like keeping up with the flow of SoCal traffic (75-80+), I drive the Scion. It'll do those speeds all day long without a care in the world.
Last time we went 80+, I heard a tapping on the rear window. Looked in the mirror, and it was a 16oz coffee cup caught in the draft. Opened the window, (sliding window,) and it finally flew in. True story.
I cruise around 65-70 but see maybe 75 or 80 if I'm passing. Both trucks have 4.10's so they don't quite cruise at that speed. Going to swap 3.55's into the diesel before the summer though.
Anyone who hasn't had 2.73 gears will never understand how easy his truck cruises at 80mph. Enjoy it while you can Octane. That is the one thing I miss about the 2.73's. I keep it below 65 now with my 3.55's.

Not that it doesn't, but I won't take it past 65. I usually stay off of interstates and if I am on one, I set the cruise at 60. I hug the right side and don't mind getting passed.
If I can perform the 5speed swap I want, it would be a different story.
A couple of times I got my 302/3.55/AOD/standard size Michelin LTX tires up to 80-82mph while keeping up with traffic on a rough strech of I5(near dodger stadium) without noticing the speed. I did not try to go that fast. The ride was very smooth over a rough strech of freeway. Better than my Volvo 850 mid-size sedan. The acceleration was very easy. I've replaced most of the suspension and sway bar parts and bushings. Also I added a lot of sound proofing. I was surprised my Mustang PCM did not limit my speed. The ONLY change was the wind noise!
Since I put in my instantaneous MPG gauge, I rarely go above 60, unles it cannot be avoided for saftey or courtesy. I get much better mileage at 52mph. Gas costs money. I've got better things to do with my money than burn it up to get somewhere two minutes earlier!
