I want to put a strong front dif in my 71 f100 4x4.It currently has a d44 out of a 76 f100 in it. I would like to know if the dana 60 will bolt right in.If not how hard is it to do? I also heard that a company make sa 9 inch front dif that will handle 44 inch tires would this be hard to do? In any case I want to run 38 to 44 inch tires and my d44 will not do it w/out breakage.Any ideas?
Your dana 44 will handle 38's pretty well. A lot of 3/4 ton trucks have a heavy duty dana 44, instead of the 60. A dana 60 will not bolt up, don't you have coil springs? Dana 60's are set up for leaf springs.
Don't get me wrong , it can be done, but I think tat you would have to know your way around a welder pretty well.
Most people that break Dana 44's have too high of a gear ratio, or had really old components in their 44.
My neighbor has a 71 or 72 ford with a six inch sus. lift and 38.5 TSL's, it does really well. It has the 390 and I welded up the rear end for him.
