Hi I getting ready to get exhaust for my powerstroke and I was wondering what brands you all prefer.....is there any difference in sound between the different brands of mufflers ?????? and what does everyone think about the downpipe...3 1/2 or 4 inch....Ive heard you loose bottom with the 4 inch????
thanks Frank
I just upgraded my exhaust yesterday from the standard ATS turn down to the ATS dual 4" stainless with the 4" downpipe. Sounds great. Also, my truck had some Max Chip on it. I upgraded that yesterday also to the ATS 3 way selectable chip.
I picked up a horrendous amount of bottom end even on the low setting of the chip. I would attribute that mostly to the chip, not so much to the exhaust. But if the 4" downpipe is hurting my bottom end, I sure am not noticing it. And I don't see how it could since all the back pressure you want in a turbo vehicle is built into the a/r ratio of the turbine housing.
I run a 4" om my 99, Im happy with it.
I have no preformance mods on that truck, more or less my stock exhaust got knocked off and I got a deal on the 4".
I have a 3 1/2 and then four to the end and have quite a bit of lag off the line but have attributed that to other things. Not really a difference with the lag in the pipe sizes at least in my truck. Your truck sure breath a lot better with bigger pipe. Remeber a diesel is just a big air pump.
I have a friend who put dual straight pipes on his '02 F-350 Diesel. I never heard a diesel backfire til he put those on. It rivals any gas engine as far as sound goes. He has 4" running to 5" tips. Really the only thing that sets his apart from gas straight pipes is the turbo whine/chatter. I don't know if it's good for a diesel, but it sure sounds good to me!
