I know there are date code numbers underneath the valve cover that will give me a date heads were made. But is there any way to tell what I have from the numbers on the outside?
Block is a 1971 302
Heads: passenger side has the number 33 near the #1 spark plug hole and a #6 on the top rear corner near valve cover.
The driver's side head has the #6 at the front top corner near valve cover and the #25 or 26 at the rear near (just behind) the last spark plug on that side.
Have searched for a long time but have only found a reference to a 289 HI PO head with numbers 19,20,21 on the outside corners.
BTW the heads have 1:6 rolloer rockers, screw in studs and a spring seat machined in. There is also a guide plate on them. It is a pedelstal style, no rail. And the roller rockers look like the old style with double nuts on top.
ANY IDEAS I'm beat can't find anything. and don't remember date code
To my knowledge the only way you can find a cast date is to remove the valve covers for one. Next, you need the Ford part/engineering number to know which heads you have. The one that starts with C8 on my 1968 or maybe D1 on a 1971 if your engine has not been altered. There weren't a lot of heads used on the early 302's so the design is unchanged for the most part especially if 2V. Hell, they used the design for years and years. My 4V heads have a 53cc chamber which was only used in 1968 on the J code engine. With my book at home I can't be more specific.

Just noticed the pedestal style. This would mean 1979 and later 302/5.0 engines yet still a standard 302 in poor port design and valve size.
My question is about the numbers on the outside locations I detailed in the post. Can anything be learned from them? I don't think i have anything special but would like to get an idea of valve size comp ratio. Would the date code detail that type of information?
Date code wouldn't mean much since the same heads were used for 25 years. So...
Valve size is easy. All 302 heads to 1993, save Cobra and Explorer, had 1.78" intakes and 1.46" exhaust.
Compression ratio depends a lot on the combustion chamber size of which there were several. The casting number would lead you to that cc size.
As for those misc. numbers on the outside I have never seen an explanation as to their exact meaning if anything. I have heard of the letters T,S and P being used on the outside of some heads to denote E7T's, E6's and GT40P's. Lower front corner passenger side.
