Just joined this site, sorry if this topic has been covered to death.
Just got a 68 stepside and need a radiator support. Did a search of the forums and found out that nobody makes one. It was suggested to use one from mid to late 70s which was galvanized and only required the drilling of a few extra holes. Two questions.
What was the first year Ford switched to galvanized? What is the last year that will fit the 68? Thanks for the help.
Sorry, I don't know all the details, however a couple guys around here have successfully made the swap. Hopefully one or two of them are still lingering around the forum.
I don't know about the 73-9 rad support being galvanized but the inner fenders sure were. You can bolt in a support from a 73-79 truck as long as you drill holes and insert j-nuts for the latch support. Use your old rad support as a pattern.
I just got a new 73-79 radiator support from Mac's for $150. It looks almost identical to my 1967 which was rusted badly. The new one has a flange to bolt on a fan shroud which the old one did not have. Probably will have to drill a few holes. I'm don't know if its galvanized because it is painted black. Looks like it will work very well.
The 73-79 inner fenders will bolt in to the older trucks. The hinges are bolted to the opposite side of the support rib but still match the older hood.
i put a galvanized radiator support it my truck out of about a 76 model. it worked great. i had to drill a couple of holes to get my 69 grill in it but other that that no problem. i think the first year of the galvazed was 74 but someone correct me if im wrong
