I have two complete 9" rear ends, one a 64 with 3.89 gears and one a 77 with 3.25 gears. Two questions, will the newer pumpkin work in the older housing and will the bigger drum brakes on the 77 work on the older 64 housing? It looks like the 77 drums would work if I use the 77 backing plates. I think that both rear ends have 31 spline axles or at least they are mared the same. Any help would be appreciated.

(Be aware that 1968/72 F100's were available with 2 different 9" rear axles.
1) 9" with 28 spline axleshafts.
2) 9" w/a 9 3/8" ring gear, 31 spline axleshafts.
9 3/8 vs 9: Only 5 parts are the same: Housing gasket, pinion seal, (1 of 2) pinion bearings, (1 of 2) pinion bearing cups, pilot bearing retainer.
EVERYTHING else is different!)
The 64 rearend will have 28 spline axles, you can swap for the bigger back brakes from a 9 inch up to 1972 if you use the backing plates. the 77 9 inch rear is wider... i think it will work but you will have to move the spring plates.
I think you would be better to swap out the unit as a whole insted of building 1 out of 2
