I'm all for being courteous but not when it makes my truck look stupid. My apologies to those who like mud flaps and fender flares but I don't like the look of them at all.

Around here the mudflap law on pickups has to do with a percentage of tire that is required to be covered by the vehicle.
A lift is generally what will cause to much tire to be exposed.
To Andrew: Whether you like it or not or think it makes your truck look stupid, these types of laws were made because people would not take responsibility and make the big knobby tires and lifted trucks not cause damage to others vehicles and injury to people.
You can think of it another way also. If you have installed whatever the law says you need and you throw debris and cause damage, you are in the clear. You have a legal vehicle with what the law says you need. You have done what is reasonable to eliminate any problem.
I've had the exact situation cause a broken windshield on a guys truck. Because I had everything required by law on my vehicle the officer basically told the other guy it was tough luck, maybe try not following so close or don't be in such a hurry.

Was it a city cop or an RC? I also prefer the no fender flare look but know a few people who have been ticketed so I put them on. One guy I know, they would not let him drive the truck without fender flares, had to tow it, now that is ridiculous. I don't have time for that. I did not know about the mud flap thing......we will see if that is an issue down the road. I have never been pulled over in this truck (which is cool and really amazing).

Any tire that is not a stock size and projects past the fender requires fender flares.
The mudflap thing actually applies to all trucks, from pickups right to the big stuff.
Only factory tinting is allowed in front of the B pillar on any vehicle. If the cop can see the little line of un-tinted glass at the top of the window, it's illegal.
For any of the above infractions, the cop at his discretion can impound the vehicle and have it towed as being unsafe. They almost never do unless you give them attitude, then you get a ticket and a tow bill..
This is for alberta only, your locale might be different.....

Funny enough I just received a ticket for tint in Lethbridge within 5 minutes of rolling into town on a business trip last week. $57 ticket with no inspection required so just going to pay it and move on. I have mud flaps, but no flares other than the slight ones on there from factory..........so lucky there I guess.
