I was looking through the local junkyard and I came upon a really old transfer case. I have been trying to find out what it is. It is in what looks like a 53-56 large ford truck. It is divorced and the front drive shaft is on the passenger side. It is big and cast iron. One odd things is bars to shift it are top and bottom not side to side like an np205 or Dana 18, 20, or 300. I only other thing I could see was cast into the back of it and it said 1.86 or 1.96 ratio. Does any one know what it is or where I can find info on it? Is it any good? Thanks.
Being that early, it was probably a conversion. Marmon Herrington?? If you find any tags or markings with that company on it, offer to haul the whole thing away. They are pretty rare.
There are several different choices for transfer cases in those years. The one that comes to mind are the Rockwell 223. They were commonly found in the M-H conversions.
The passenger side differential throws me though. It almost makes me think that it could have been homebuilt and uses a GM or Dodge front axle and a inverted transfer case. Is the front end identifiable? I have some good information on these trucks packed away in my garage. I wish I knew where to find it.
I just end up getting the transfer case anyway. Turn out that some one just rigged what I think is a NP202 into an old Ford. Turn out my original dicription was not very good. That what I get for trying to describe it from memory. I was confusing it with other transfer case it was looking at that day. But, thanks for you help anyway.
