Hey guys, when I need help I always come to ya'll first. I'm replacing my engine with another one, my question is what is a reasonable price for take out and then install? Will need to take off (starter, alternator, stall, and maybe carb)then install onto new engine. Replacing a frozen 350 with a 383 stroker. Thanks in advance to all, L8R ZFLASH
No idea, but I will state the obvious (my specialty). Post where you are and maybe someone will post up to help you out. It isn't a difficult process to do, if you have the tools. The only real specialty item would be an engine hoist (cherry picker).
At shop rates usually around $75 an hour, you can buy a lot of tools.
I imagine someone will post up actual cost, but I would bet it will be at least $500.

Good luck and enjoy the new engine.
Thanks, I'm in Houston,Tx. Don't have the knowledge or the tools to do this, but that's the around the pricing I'm looking for. Where it's at now they want around 2k and I think this is out of whack, there's a guy at work who's ASE certified who said he would do it. Well I'll just play it by ear, still haven't decided on the motor yet either. L8R ZFLASH

There's no better time than the present to learn. If you're going to really be part of the old truck hobby, you've got to get your hands dirty. Every one of us had a first time, and learned a lot the hard way by diving in and doing. I built my first truck as a high school kid and got it done enough to drive it for my senior year in high school and several years later. Pulled out a blown up flat 6 and installed a 289, C4 trans and 9" rear. And remember, 35 years ago there was no internet. You can do it. There's no rocket science involved. It's just a matter of turning nuts and bolts. You can spend $100 at Sears for a Craftsman tool kit and have about everything you'll need to do the job. Now, get to work.
Prices certainly vary depending on where you live, but I would have to say at least $1500. This is not that hard as Merc pointed out, but it's not like pulling a stock engine and putting it back in. As someone said on this site, you change one thing, three other things have to be modified. It may look like a slam dunk, but those modifications add up in time, which is, of course money if you have someone else do it. My advice is similar to Merc's. Learn to do it yourself. There's always something to fix on these old trucks and paying someone else to do it adds up. I'm sure that if I paid for all the things I did on mine, it would have cost twice as much. My two cents
I guess I should take my own advice and take whatever $$ I think something will cost and triple it - seems to be more in line with what others think is appropriate.
Is the 350 completely installed? In other words has it ever been driven with the 350?
If it has, and it's a bolt in swap, I'd charge 500-800.00 If the 350 was only partially/never completely installed, then I'd be more inclined to quote a 12-1500.00 estimate.

Yes the 350 has been in it and been driving around with it since purchase in October, just don't know what the PO did to it and it gave out. So yes it would be a bolt in swap, plus taking some of the top end stuff off the old and putting it on the new. Thanks for ya'lls input, L8R ZFLASH
Like Ax says if it was already set up and running with the 350 it will be just a matter of swapping the parts that didn't come with the crate motor and drop it in. I'd go out and rent or buy an engine hoist for a couple hundred bucks pull the motor and tranny as a unit prividing you are doing this on a cement floor so you can roll the hoist in place. This would be a weekend full of fun and a real sense of accomplishment.
Take the front sheet metal and radiator off (an hour job if it's been off within the last ten years.), will make it a simple job. If you were here and willing to lend a hand with the big pieces, I'd do it for 300.00 over a weekend.
