1995 F150 5.0 here. KOER test is saying the beast is running rich, right side (code 173) however exhaust smells nothing like gas and there isnt any smoke so my question to you experts out there, can an engine run rich without smoke or gas smell? Or is it a wacked out o2 sensor by chance? Let me know if any added info is needed.
Ive seen mine blow smoke and never throw a code so I don't see why it couldn't say it was rich and not be I'd try and atleast take the O2 sensor out and see what it looks like you might be able to clean it or for around $40 you can get a good Bosch to replace it with. They are supposed to be changed every 60k mi anyway. By the way this is jrh5610 off of f150forum.
Ok. Just in case you can add anything else heres some updated info. New ECT sensor, new oxygen sensor, new air filter. No CEL but when I run the KOER test it gives me the rich code. Since replacing the air filter the code will alternate between the rich code 173 and some code 331, never both at the same time. Also I checked the plugs and they are all white no sign of rich running.... So confusing to me.
Yeah even after changing the air filter. Am I wrong in thinking that at the very least I should see some fouled up plugs if it was indeed running rich? the code has been there for at least a month
you have cats.. if they are doing their job you wouldn't smell fuel depending on how rich it is running.. my exhaust smells like fuel all the time.. no cats and running a little rich..
