wont start, have spark

i dont know what came across me but i power washed my engine in my 1986 ranger 2.3, now i cant get it to start. it will turn over and i checked for a spark which i got. i sprayed starting fluid in the throtal and it runs as long as u gve it a shot but quits when u stop spraying.
im guessing have a fuel problem. normal i would say fuel pump is bad but as i said this all happen after i power washed the engine. ran normal before i sprayed engine.
i have been looking over the wire and even replaced the fuel pump relay because it had water coming out and when i tried to remove the relay it fail apart. replaced and still wont fire.
i am lost in what deriction i should be going to fix this problem. any advise will be helpful. if you know of another form that can help me please post a link. thank u

When you turn the ignition key to on, the fuel pump runs for about a second to build up enough fuel pressure to start the engine. If you can hear the pump humming inside the fuel tank then you know the relay's good.

You could also have damaged or disconnected the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator as you were cleaning the engine. The fuel pressure regulator's are usually on the fuel rail, and there's a vacuum hose to make them work. Check you didn't mess that up with your power washer. There's also a test port on the fuel rail, you can check the actual pressure. Should be 40 psi I think.

frapper, i checked the vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator. it intack and not broke or loose. i went ahead an replaced the fuel pump relay because the old one came apart when i unpluged it. i did not find the test port for the fuel pressure. i followed the fuel rail from the reg to the back of the engine to it dropped back down to the fuel line. i turned the key to the on position and could not hear the fuel pump run. i know in most cases that would be a sign the fuel pump is bad, but i dont want to believe that in this case. could this be the case. i fot power to 3 wires on the relay out of four.
anyone else looking at this an has a idea please post. open to all suggestions. thank u

Have you checked for power at the pumps? Both of them?

Second ( high pressure) pump is on the frame rail driver's side. Just crawl under and look around -- you should be able to find it by following the fuel line.

Tank pump provides a sufficient quantity of fuel, frame pump jacks up the pressure.

I would check the fuel pump fuse and the inertia switch.

You found the fuel pressure relief unit on the fuel rail at the alternator of the engine. The pressure valve is at the other end of the chromed fuel, toward the firewall end of the engine. You are looking for a schrader valve, similar to a tire valve.

I don't recall your saying that you heard the fuel pump run when you first turn the ignition key on. Does the pump run?

Let us know. Also, getting electrical parts wet from the engine washing may have gotten something wet that is causing the "no start" condition. Use a hair dryer to go over the wiring on the engine and then try starting it.

the fuel pump doesnt run when u turn key over. i have power to the fuel pump relay on 3 wires out of 4. i checked for power at boost pump on side rail on driver side and i dont have no power to eaither post. still trying to get wiring harness apart to the fuel pump in tank to check for power there. can not find fuse for fuel pump in the fuse box under steering wheel. looks as fuse is mixing. looks like someone ran a hot wire in that spot but have not traced that wire yet to see where it goes. that wire doex have power.

ok heres what i have found out. i have no power at eaither fuel pumps. have power at fuel pump relay. placed a jumpper cable to the red wire coming off the fuel pump on driver side fram rail and connected to my bat and can hear it running. have not tryed to start it yet like that yet. have traced a pink wire with black strip that powers that fuel pump. do not have power at that point which was on driver side under hood in a cluster of wires closed to the coil pack. i notic there r two wires going back towards the fuel pumps that comes together as one which is pink w black strip. that pink black stripe goes over to the pass side and heads back down.

i am totally lost in all this running around with this pink wire w black stripe. i dont understand how that wire ties into the fuel pump relay. i havent traced it to the relay yet. do u think i could just unplug the two wires for the fuel pump on the driver side that comes together as one in a pink w black stripe wire and run that on a switch with a fuse to cut pumps on and off?

let me know what u think. thank you and all that have replyed so far

Before testing the pump circuit you need to energize it. See this link Super High Output

If the problem started when you got the engine wet, I would soak everything electrical in WD40. Its great for getting moisture out of places you don't want it. You can spray it in the fuse box and on any of the connectors.

Heres how its wired: from pump relay to inertia switch is orange/blue stripe. From ineria switch to connector c160 is pink/black. Connector c160 to the pumps black/pink. C160 is left hand fender apron. Energize the circuit as shown at the link and check for voltage at the inertia switch

ok think i have this fig out now. i traced pink wire black strip from driver side the powers the fuel pumps to the pass side back inside the cab to the fuel cut off switch if u roll it then after that switch it changes to an orngen wire going into another relay called eec/ ecm relay. i have no power coming off that relay. i got one coming tomorrow. ill see then if that fixes the problem. i texted the the system there by jumping 12 volts to the fuel cut off switch for a roll over and fuel pumps ran and truck ran. so maybe the relay is bad. will let yall know tomorrow after i get home from work. thank u
