Just got the tag renewal from the CA DMV and it says I need a smog check.... wtf....
I guess we have to smog check our diesel trucks ??
Anyone else run into this yet ?
I thought a person had 5-6yrs after buying a new vehicle before I would need to worry about getting a smog check....
On gas vehicles they say to be sure and get them running up to temp and hot before doing a smog check... Anything special a person needs to do with a diesel truck ?
I called the local smog check place. He said the diesel truck check is double in price what it is for a regular vehicle. It involves hooking it up to a computer... no spinning drum or tail pipe sniff test.... so sounds like half the work and double the price.... I'll just smile and say "thank you California".
I've heard some states rev to red line (or at least to the highest RPM the computer allows) a few times.
In fact, I thought someone here said that.
I've never had an emissions test so in reality I don't know anything to help you but diesels are most efficient when they're at operating temp. too so (1) operating temp in theory would yield best results and (2) if the testing people decide to floor it while in park or whatever it is they do, at least the engine won't be cold and you won't end up punching somone.
On a side note, you said they only connect a computer so I wonder what they are looking for?

Reason: typos...
They are looking for codes, errors, best to make sure to work it, get DPF clean, warmed up and taken inso it doesn't go into DPF clean in testing. Atleast make sure it completes clean.
i had that with my 6.4. its every two years. visual inspection only. basically to make sure no CEL, no black smoke, no EGR delete type of mods, etc... it was the normal price. im sure some places will gouge cause they figure diesels are expensive so owners have lots of money. but if you find a decent place, price shouldnt be much different. if your in the LA area (the valley specifically) i can send you to the right guy.
If I had a free home and in California..no way would I live in that communistic state...worse restrictions...from EPA, to hunting to goverment spending to ...wait this explains it...
Picked up my F250 first week of June 2010 and my 2012 DMV renewal requires a smog check. . .just more $$$ for Jerry Brown and Kalifornia to cover all the @#~& to keep pension funds going.
