engineering feat? huge amounts of money?
a stroker rotating assembly hardly costs THAT much if you are rebuilding an engine.
with stock heads they seem to be in the 450hp 500ft lb range.
dropping holley jets into a hole hardly requires a machine shop.
Look around, these are some of the things people have used:
Michigan
Midland
Modified
Miserable
I believe JB78f150 is correct in that they are all slang made up by the public masses and that Ford had never designated it to mean anything in particular.
The hard part might be coming up with a credible & reliable, authoritative source for that, though.
IIRC I saw it documented somewhere, either by Bubba F250 or some magazine, I totally forget for certain.
Granted, neither Bubba's site nor a magazine can be considered incredibly credible & authoritative, but it's probably the best we have 30-some years later.
There area variety of links in the 335 forum's Tech Sticky which may contain something to substantiate what I said above.
351M the "M" is for modified somehow it was derived from the 351 Cleveland, I have heard that they put a 400 crank in a 351 Cleveland for some reason thus the need for anouther designation "351M"
1969--Boss 302 intro'd with canted valves. Same deck as 289/302, same bore spacing. 4" x 3" B & S.
1970--351C intro'd, similar heads to Boss, taller deck, almost same as 351W, same bore spacing. 4" x 3.5" B & S.
1971--400 intro'd, similar heads to 351c. Tall deck block, close to same height as the 429/460. Same bore spacing. 4" x 4" B & S.
1975--351M intro'd, identical to 400 except for crank and pistons. 4" x 3.5" B & S. (It's a "Modified" 400, so some think that's what the M is all about)
400 cranks were machined to fit 351C motors to make performance 400s (plus whatever minor overbore)
....... they *are* built for horsepower. (ever heard of a gt40 or an AC cobra?) Sadly most people here have only ever seen them in truck form (ie crap compression, and whatnot). With a little work they are very reliable in the 400hp range,......
..... The fe's have a sound that scream 60's muscle.
I heard one on another forum the other day I thought was funny. A fella was struggling with an old pickup and he exclaimed that FE stood for "Fluids Everywhere"
F'ing Enormous when on the engine stand fully dressed. Goofy A$$ top end design, poor exhaust manifold bolt plan, pain in the buttox to do an intake manifold change, but great motors.
