I'm currently doing a restoration on my 1977 F150. I've owned this truck since late 1979 and in the mid 80's I did a mini resto including a "Highliner".
Now with this restoration I'm starting to consider how I want to set up my audio. I already have a pretty good idea of what I want as far as a receiver. These days just about everything has AM/FM, CD, and MP3 input. I'm really not interested in big amps and giant speakers. Nor am I interested in spending mega bucks! What I do want is a relatively nice sound.
So, with all that said, my question concerns whether or not to keep the "Highliner" and if I do, should I put the receiver up there again or should I move it back to the dash and put something else up there? Another words, if I keep it, I have two possible locations for a receiver and many places for speakers. This makes for lots of possibilities. Maybe gauges, other electronics or whatever. Or I could just get rid of it, put the receiver in the dash and use the dash and door panel speaker location and call it a day.
You can get some newer speakers that rock and will fit up top. I vote put your head unit up top and fill the dash with gauges and an accessory switch panel if you need extra switches. That way all wireing stays neat and only 3 wires to hide for the "highliner"
I would say just mount the reciever wherever you prefer it, since you have had it in both places
I would concentrate more on using higher quality speakers (higher price, but wouldn't it be cool to have a "Bose" system?), and if you do get a small sub and some tweeters, you can use crossovers so that each is only producing the sounds it is best at.
