Just like everyone else has said, nice write up and swap. I do like how you routed your vacuum hose for the Distributor. I was thinking the other day about that, because I have allready bought all my parts for my Dura Spark swap except for the vacuum hoses. I think the whole thing is one sweet setup. I do have a question, where were the hoisting points on the engine or what did you do to support it to remove it?

Like you said in your other post, passion for these trucks exists! and for these Inline 6 engines!! Me I would rather have a new early 1980s Ford truck (if they existed) instead of a 2012 truck!

Thanks man. You should stop in at a local salvage yard and find a donor. There are stop brackets that I used. I am sure you won't have a problem finding them.

Another old thread resurrection

I went to the jy to get a pedal assembly, shifter, boot and all the other stuff and was successful!

But... before I tear my 81 apart to make the switch, does the pedal assembly bolt right in? The 1987-91 assembly is cast aluminum, and I am just hoping it'll bolt right up.

Thanks,

John

Sorry to tell you this, but the bracket changed after '86......so you need the earlier '83-'86 version (also, some '83 trucks were still mechanical, not hydraulic).

another detail question... master and slave cylinders should be from the 90's truck and specific to the M5R2 I assume, not from the 83-86 truck?

Hydraulic parts from the same donor would keep you safe.........I don't know regarding earlier master cylinders.

But earlier, external slave cylinders won't work......the Mazda trans has a concentric slave cylinder inside the bell housing.

Speed Drive Gear on Shaft

This post is 6 years old, but here goes my question about your swap:

I'm putting a '94 M5R2 into an '81 4.9 currently with a C6. You said you purchased the speedo drive gear as a kit, but you didn't mention if you had to replace the whole shaft. Is there a kit that comes with a drive gear to mount to the existing late model shaft, or did you have to replace the shaft, the housing, and obtain the gears?

Thanks for any help, Chris.

First, welcome to FTE!!!

Second, I hate to tell you but he hasn't been on FTE since January of 2012. So, it is highly unlikely you will get a response from him.

So, the best bet is for you to start your own thread and ask questions. With the proper title to the thread you'll get more people joining in to answer your questions.

The only problem I have with my ZF swap is mine is a shortbed, with mid-ship tank, Turning hard to the right, the upper universal wacks the gas tank strap....
