Hi,
Every now and again, Adobe yaps that I should update to version X -- does anybody have any experience with that?
I'm hesitant because it's outside of the normal update process -- and they really seem to want me to sign up for it.

Version X is just the latest edition, the reader should be free to download, use and update as they recommend.
Its safe and sure they'll try enticing you to pay for the full edition---I've never needed to create PDF files so have just never bought it myself.

i do not do any upgrades.
every time windows or anything does an upgrade it screws up my computer. so all upgrades and updates are turned off.
the desktop is now 8 years old and still works perfectly.
the laptop is now 10 years old, and i have had it for 3 years now since i did the hard drive format and fresh install of XP.
the only problem i have is a dead memory battery. so i just leave it on.
