I was wondering if the 351/400m harmonic balancer would work on a 351w.
It has been a while since I have worked on either of those two engines but I believe the balancers are different. Timing marks are different for sure. To me it wouldn't be worth the risk just for that reason alone.
would i be able to use any of the pulleys from the 351/400m and the mounts or would i have to get the same set of 351w/302
I know the water pump pulleys are the same because I used a 302 pump pulley for my 351m. The 302 pulley was smaller and cooled a little better. But all the pulleys should work. I think the crank pulleys share the same bolt pattern but I'm not positive. I have all those pulleys out in the garage somewhere so I can see if I can find them tomorrow and let you know. As far as mounts go the power steering pump mounts are different and will not bolt up. My 351m engine did not come with an alternator bracket and I think I used one off a 302 so it should work.
so you are saying the 302 may be a bit smaller which let your engine run cooler. I'd appreciate it if you did look just to verify for me, the main one is the crank pulley b/c the alt. came with the pulley on it.

Finally got a few minutes of free time and checked that out. Looks like the crank pulleys are the same. I can't see any difference with the naked eye anyway.
Yes, I don't remember what kind of improvement on cooling the slightly smaller 302 water pump pulley made, but there was some. I figured any extra cooling wouldn't hurt. My 351m always ran a little warm and I know I could drive it around town in July after switching out the pulleys without it overheating. Engine eventually blew up but at least I got a few more miles of in town driving out of it.
well that's weird how there's no difference that you can see but it ran cooler .. if there was a difference it would have to make the 302 smaller b/c my guess is the water pump was turning faster due to the smaller pulley but is that an extra strain that would wear it out quicker
Yes, the 302 pulley is a smaller diameter. By about 1/2" or less. I had a mechanical gauge hooked up but I can't remember the exact degree of drop that occurred. I know it did bring me back somewhere close to operating temperature, 190-200. As far as wear on the water pump goes I doubt spinning the pump a little faster would cause a problem unless the 302 pump was built to handle the extra rpm's, hence the smaller pulley. But who knows. That is my opinion, but the risk is yours. Good luck.
FoMoCo offered accessory single/double/triple/quadruple sheave outer pulleys. These bolt to the harmonic balancers and were used when installing P/S, A/C, Dual Belt Alternators and smog pumps.
