I recently purchased a 56 F100 that a former owner removed the complete wiper system and closed up the tower holes. I want to install a new system and am wondering if any of you folks have suggestions/experience on this. Original type with electric motor or aftermarket? Your comments are appreciated!
Vacuum wipers suck - literally and figuratively. I had a 1964 Rambler Classic with vacuum wipers and the darned things would stop every time I touched the gas.
I definetly will go electric but this truck has a flat stainless panel over the firewall area and if I use the stock wiper sytem the motor is on the firewall, and therefore won't mount without serious modification either to the motor support or the stainless panel. Right now the firewall is "clean" and the wiper motor would certainly change that. Wondered if anyone has attempted to mount the motor inside under the dash? It appears the aftermarket units have the motor under the dash but they are cable driven (plus over $300) and I'm concerned about longevity and reliability. I guess I want it all!
I'm just kind of wondering out loud here, but 48-52 trucks had the wiper motor under the dash. Suppose there's any chance something like that could be retro-fitted to a 56?
Thanks for the input Vern. I'll do a little checking into that. I have found a complete used wiper linkage assembly that I'll probably buy.
As a side note do you or anyone else here know if the 56 dash is welded or bolted in place? Sure would be easier to do all this if the dash were out. I'm also replacing the wiring so it would benefit that project as well.
