Does anyone know if the XL package trucks come prewired for a tach? Currently mine does not have the tach, but I would like to upgrade this if its prewired and such a thing is available as an aftermarket item.
Hi Jimmy,
I believe that your truck is wired for a factory tach and you would have to just plug in a new instrument cluster.
Or you could maybe try an aftermarket add on type tach with a signal driver. You'd have to check some tach makers sites for info on that.
If you do a search with the search button at the top of the page you'll find a few posts with similar questions.
my 97 f-150 is the base model f-150 and it does not have the tach. Is my by chance prewired for a tach also? I would like to upgrade but don't want a goofy looking dash mounted one.
At work today I asked our partsman to look up the instrument cluster/dash wiring harness to see if there were different ones.
He found that having a tach or not makes no difference. A couple things made a difference like remote keyless entry and 4x4 or not.
It looks like the wiring for the tach should be there in all of them.
so going from that, can i buy a gauge with a tach and just plug in the wire for the tach? or is there something more complicated than that. From what you said, it's nothing more than putting in a gauge face with a tach and plugging it all in. I just want to make sure before I buy the gauge face and try to hook it up. I guess the only thing left after that would be to buy a needle for the tach huh...........
