Transfer case Lubricant

I have a 1980 F150 with a New Process 208 Transfer Case. The owners manual says to use Type F Auto tranny fluid in the transfer case. Haynes manual says to use Mercon in it and when I drained it, the fluid was gear oil-do not know the viscosity. Any help would be appreciated as I am waiting to refill until I get some answers here.

Thanks,

Scott

My 1980 has automatic transmission fluid in the transfer case. So I know that's right. But if I had to choose between Haynes and the owners manual, I would definitely pick the owners manual, unless somebody knows of a later change. I bet it really wouldn't make much difference which auto tranny fluid was in there. I had a mustang with a T5 5 speed and it took the Mercon.

I dont think Mercon existed in 1980. The main difference is friction modifier. It makes no difference in a transfer case. Any ATF you have on hand will work for this application.

If the original manual says Type F, I'd stick with that, unless it has ever been rebuilt, in which case I'd use Dexron/Mercon. The old seals may only handle Type F, but the new ones will definitely take D/M. In '83, the manual says Mercon.

Gear oil is just wrong.

Thank you for you help and replies. I will indeed make sure the fluid is replaced with the proper ATF and not gear oil.
