Speedometer not working.

I have a 1990 F-150 4x4 5-speed. Recently purchased and speedometer was not working. Removed cable and was able to get a reading by spinning it by hand. The gear in the hole for the cable felt pretty smooth. I installed a shim (thanks to an Arnold Palmer tea can) and tightened down the bracket holding it down. Still didn't work, but I believe it caught every now and then. When ever I drove over a big enough bump the the speedometer would pick up enough to catch my current speed. So I believe it is the gear in the actual transmission that needs to be replaced. Just wondering if any one else agrees with that diagnosis.

Probably right. however might be worth checking that the squared end on the inner cable at the speedo head is good.

zip tie the cable up to something. That usually fixes the issue. Pretty common issue for about every ford using this speedometer set up in this era.
