wierd timeing issue

do her by ear for now. as for the light. double check all your connections for good contact. might make sure the light is hooked up the right way (some have an arrow to show the direction the spark should be moving through the wire) hook directly to the battery. If all else fails, make sure your ALT is putting out enough voltage while it's running. if that doesn't work I suggest dynamite for the light.

ok so i stepped up and spent a little on a timing light 40 bucks and walla it worked. i have come to the conclusion that it was 2 bad lights one by number of uses and the other by cheap manufactoring. now that i got it working onward to the rough idle and in drive idle rpms i so need a tach and thanks for all the help ive been driving the truck I did the first timing by ear

You sure you got the timing right? How did you set the initial timing?
Make sure the vacuum advance is disconnected and the vacuum source is capped. Set it to spec, probably around 7 or 8 degrees btdc. Then reconnect the vacuum line and set the idle

i did some r and r today yes i disconnected the vac advance and caped it i dont have a tach just yet so iam unsure if it is trully jumpen a bunch from idle to in drive but it sounds like it is to me could be fan noise though iam unsure. i know that at idle it is smooth but high were it sets when in drive is a little rough shakes the truck just a tad anylower and things get jiggly. Ive worked on tons of chevy so i know that setting the timeing is all and all the same just different numbers that and those were v8 not inline iam planning on getting a tach but due to me getting married next week every penny is going towards that. After setting the timing at 11 maybe 12 degree it is running really strong pulls hard for a 6 i know that these are low rpm torqy motors

I've never had a I6 in one of theses. There ate some guys on here that are total experts on those babies.
I would recommend searching for the threads on that...I've seen several on just that...300 intake and exhaust options. If you don't find what you're looking for...start a new thread...one of those experts will find you
Sorry I'm not much help there...but would rather get you to an expert than just guess
