Just bought my truck Sunday and I am new to diesels, and I want to clean the engine, I always have with my gas engines. aside of dirt and grime causing problems It will also let me know if there is a leak starting right away.
I was just wondering if there was a part or area I should take particular caution with? I normally use a degreaser and light pressure wash. With all the electronics everywhere I will forgo the pressure washing and just hand scrub the difficult areas. Not that there are many mostly around the intercooler boots, one is new and had been wiped down the other is just funky.
I'd recommend a cleaner like Purple Power; you want something that's aluminum safe (allot parts on these engines are aluminum). Most degreasers along with Simple Green and a couple of the other "biodegradable" cleaners aren't safe for aluminum...read the directions on the back to see if it's safe for aluminum. I know, what guy does that.
As far as areas to be careful around...around the FICM on the left side of the engine (driver's side/below the degas bottle) is one area I wouldn't power wash.

READ DIRECTIONS really have make sure no one is looking
being I bought a different cleaner then I usually use I guess I have to,
I did not know that about simple green I used to use it a lot before I switched to purple power
I use (Super Clean) on all kinds of stuff including under the hood of the truck. It will clean aluminum to a shine, but it will etch it if left on it without rinsing it off.
As far as knocking off grease it does a much better job than any lousy degreaer you can buy these days. I have not found a degreaser that works like they used to. You can spray the foaming degreaser on a piece of apple pie in leu of whip cream nowadays.

Yeah nothing works like it used to especially here in cali cant find old school parts dip for a LONG time. Stuff now I could leave it in there a week and it looks like just hosed it off with water.

You are going to like it, I have tried it all and nothing else I've seen comes close. And its biodegradable.
The best example of buying things that don't work is: (paint stripper) used to be able to buy jasco and other brands of strippers and the paint would literally lift off the wood or whatever you wer'e stripping. They do NOTHING anymore. EPA changed lots of products to 100% inert.!

Damn... it works pretty freakin good! I should go buy a bunch before they outlaw it too. You know the rules out here "if it works too good we must get rid of it"
Now to see what I missed in the morning, I know there was no cleaner left on i gave the thing a shower for long time to make sure. There was a couple of spot that were bugging me and I know i wont be able to get to it until at least Tuesday, so I had to do it now.

Pep Boys,Walmart and Graingers all sell it in 2-1/2 gallon jugs. Its kinda bulky to refill into spray bottles but the price is better.
Some people say its not good to spray water in the engine compartment but I absolutely disagree. For one thing: it rains and all vehicles go through it and blows in from below as well as from the fender wells off the tires ect.
A dirty, greasy engine compartment holds moisture in that dirt. Which causes corrosion in wiring plugs, all your rubber, hoses, cables and painted parts that are supposed to protect the steel instead destroys it.
I have always kept all my vehicles clean under the hood and it pays you back in the long run because it's not rotting out parts. There are sensitive area's and your manual in the glove box tells you where to be careful at.
Keep her clean and shining it will look great and make you proud
For those that use purple power, i do and it used to be the sh=t but seems like last few months it doesn't have the kick it used to . I think they are watering it down just doesn't clean the same .
FYI Simple Green makes a cleaner safe for aluminum,
Call "Simple Green for Aircraft"
Imagine they thought really hard to come up with that name
