Bought a used F250 to play around and haul things with, but has 1 problem.
the tailgate won't open. I've heard that most fords get this problem. When I brought it up with the person I bought it from, he said he'd try to fix, but I think he just made it worse. Here's what's wrong...the handle broke, the rod that runs back there isn't attached to the handle where it should be, and on one side, the rod won't open the latch. So if you mess with the rods that open the latch, one side will open, but the other side is just too jacked up to open it.
Am I making any sense?!?!
What are my options in fixing this tailgate, or getting a new one?
Can't you take the panel off of the inside of the tailgate and pull the rods to make it open. After that you should be able to find a handle assembly at the junkyard for it.
Yep, I pulled the panel off to get to the rods, one side works, but the other side doesn't. It's all buggered up from the guy I bought the truck from trying to fix it. It seems like it's either binding in there or the latch from the tailgate to the truck bed is broken...
Clamp on the rod with some vise grips and pop them with your palm, it should release. After you replace it, be sure to keep it lubed with some WD 40 or something similar.
