I was wondering if anyone could help me out on this- I have an '08 ranger with the class III towing package and the 4L V6. I need to tow a small trailer that has a 7 pin connector. Currently I only have the 4 pin flat connector, so I need to wire up the 7-pin and I also need to put in a brake controller for the trailer. Are thier any wiring harnesses that are pre-wired under the dash or near the reciever that will make these easier to install or do I have to run wires from the battery and all that?
You will need a fifth wire for a brake controller, so you will need a seven pin plug on the truck end. You will also need to wire the controller from the battery back to the truck plug.
Electric trailer brakes pull a fairly high current draw. You need a separate fused wire coming from the battery to provide power for the brakes. I'm not aware of a wire that is heavy enough available under the dash (that is not to say that there isn't such a wire).
Fused or circuit braker 12v(12gauge wire)
Ground(12 gauge)
12v from brake light switch
And 12gauge wire run from controller to the plug at the rear of the truck
