1965 Ford F100 brake light problem

Anyone know what my problem may be with my 1965 Ford f100.
I have running lights, tail lights, turn signals and a brake light on the DS rear, but no brake light on the passenger side rear. I replaced the brake light master cylinder switch and get fire to one side all the time but with brakes pressed I dont get fire on the other side. Doesnt make sense to me, why I would have turn signals on both sides and a brake light on Driver side rear but not on passenger side rear. Put a test light on it from the rear forward to the firewall and still no fire on the passenger side rear. Where is the turn signal flasher located? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

You're absolutely sure you have a working right rear turn signal? And your left brake light works? If that's the case, then the problem is almost certainly in your turn signal switch located in your steering column just under the steering wheel. Both turn signals and brake lights go through there. If you have one brake light then the brake light switch on the master cylinder is working. If you have both rear running lights and both rear turn signals then your 1157 bulbs and wiring and sockets are fine. About the only thing left is the turn signal switch. When you order a new one, make sure you get it as a Ford replacement part. There are plenty of cheap imitations out there, but many of them don't work or fit too well. I got mine from National Parts Depot, but there are plenty of other vendors who will also have what you need. Good luck!

Switch the non working brake light and the turn signal wire. I had the same problem with a brand new switch. I have a diagram if you need one.

Okay fellas I will try that. When you say switch them, where to switch? At the turn signal switch? Diagram would be great if you have one. I appreciate the advice.

The tail light bucket acts as the ground for the lighting. The wiring diagrams have been included in previous posts. The power for the brakes are wired through the turn signal switch. If you need a switch, follow SuperSabre's advice and get a Ford product which has been kindly listed by ND above. The turn signal flasher is located under the dash. Good luck.

ok, im reading this a few years afterwards, i too have a 65 f100 and i have similar problems. I have functioning tail lights that come on with the headlights, hazards work, and the right turn signal occasionally works. What doesnt work is the brake lights, or the left turn signal.

I replaced the bulbs, and brake light switch on the master cylinder and still nothing. i also replaced the headlight switch because i read somewhere on this sight that my be the cause of it.

what tips or what direction would you point me in to help fix this problem?

also, my headlights, they are new sealed beam bulbs, now has a new headlight switch, new floorboard dimmer switch, and a new headlight harness. I have perfectly functioning low beams, but when i hit the button on the floor to turn on the high beams, the headlights just switch off. what could be the cause of this?

Thanks!!

ttempli1 Welcome to and the Slicks Forum.

I say check grounding scrape and clean making for better connections, might not be what is required but the cost is hard to beat.

For the headlights, switch the leads down at the dimmer switch and see if the high beams come on and the lows stay off.

No brake lights 1966 f100

Parking lights- Yes
head lights- Yes
high beams- No ( missing switch on floor)
Turn Signal - Yes (drivers side twice as bright and passenger side blinks slower)
Hazards - Yes

when I take the leads off the brake switch and touch them together the brake lights both come on. Also does there need to be a ground wire coming off each tail light? I have one on the rear drivers side but not the passenger side. Thanks for any help. I replaced the brake switch and the problem was fixed for a minute but the problem came back. Can it be a clogged switch?

C1AZ-13480-A (replaced 0A-13480) .. Brake Lamp Switch (Motorcraft SW-24) / Available from Ford, auto parts stores, repro parts sellers.

1940/66 myriad FoMoCo vehicles.

This switch is pressure activated when you step on the brake pedal. It's notorious for getting gummed up with dirty brake fluid.

If you don't already have a copy of this, print a couple out. Will save a lot of headache.

replaced switch and problem solved. Thank you. I had just replaced that switch. Surprised it failed so quickly. Had brakes and lines replaced when I bought truck. So I would think the fluids fresh.

The taillight bucket touching the bed is the ground. No wires.

Can someone post a picture of the master brake cylinder switch installed on the brake pedal? I just bought a 65 and is currently off. I have the switch , just don’t know how it goes on. Thank you!
