How about this compute ?

Hi,

I asked about computes a while back, and got some good advice.

I just found this from Dell $450 plus ~ $20 shipping,

Not exceptional graphics, I guess, but I'm not a gamer. I surf, do office and some stuff like that. I do like to watch some flash and other vids. (My internet is RF DSL, so it's not too speedy).

Dell Vostro 260 Mini tower ( NOT SLIM!)
Processor
Intel(r) Core(tm) i5-2400 processor (3.10GHz, 6MB cache)
Operating System
Genuine Windows(r) 7 Home Premium SP1, 64bit
Monitor
No Monitor
Memory7
4GB8 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz
Hard Drive
500GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache(tm)
Video Card
Intel(r) HD Graphics 2000 (VGA, HDMI)
Security Software
Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security, 15 months
Warranty
1 Year Basic Limited Warranty and 1 Year NBD On-Site Service
Optical Drive
16X DVD+/-RW Drive

Any opinions ? I'm not at all sure about the Trend stuff, but I can (hopefully ) toss it if needed.

Thanks,

hj

Sounds good to me. With Windows HP you will not have the option of MS XP mode if you want to load some older stuff but there is a better option anyway if you have an XP CD (assuming you would want to load old stuff).

I just picked up a HP for 550 that has 1 terabyte and 8gb mem at office max. They have a gateway for same price with 1-1/2 terabytytes 8gb.
Either way they are bigger than I could use. As far as security I use avg, superantispyware, malwarebytes, ccleaner and of course adblock which are all free. I go to cnet.com for a bunch of that. No expert here by any means but just saying what I did Friday

Just noticed the question about Trend Micro..

It comes with a 15 month subscription so I would use it till then..

It is a good antivirus.. Just don't do the automatic updating..

Microsoft Security Essentials has been revamped a while back is getting good reviews..
It is free..

AVG and AVAST are other good free Antivirus..

Thanks guys, virtual reps all around ( my rep button is broken )

LK -- Do I have to go to the next level if I want to install VB6 and do the occasional batch file? I can live without either, but I use them fairly often.

DJ - did you mean to just not auto upate the software - or the definitions as well. Currently, I scan weekly and do a manual def update just before the scan.

Thanks again,

hj

If you have W7 professional or above you can access the XP mode facility. If you have a genuine XP disc there are better ways to do it and W7 Hp is fine.
What you are doing is running a virtual machine on XP within the W7 OS. It lets you load any stuff that you have on XP that is not compatible with W7 OS.

I was talking about the automatic subscription renewal that most companies want you to sign up for so they can just charge your account when the subscription runs out..

It has nothing to do with automatically updating the virus definitions or program, which you should automatically update
