That's just from running over the idler or tensioner.
The belt shouldn't squeal because of that, It doesn't need to transmit any torque to turn something that freewheels.

Thought I would share how mine turned out with you guys. I am still going to dress it a little better but other than that I am VERY happy with the information I got from this thread. By the way on my 94 it was all a direct fit and no cutting of the bracket needed. I also need to get some bigger heat shrink.

Here obviously is the back of tyhe alternator and yes I still need to go to the junkyard and get the single wire plug for my new 3G.

Here is my fuse mounting next to my Sound system fuse.

Here is my conmection to the starter solenoid.

Im no expert on belts. Here is what the belt looks like: I think it is time for a new belt anyways, the tensioner is almost out of range.

I also filmed the nose from the belts.

My truck had a 1020k6 belt before and i had to use a 1010k6 belt to make up the difference in the pully diameter. (my truck was a stock 95a 3G that I upgraded to 130a 3G alternator

The pulley on the 3G was the same size as on my old 2G. And that noise was there BEFORE the swap as well so I don't think its the alternator pulley...

Take your belt off and wiggle each pully to check for play. I'm thinking you have a bad tensioner pully or idler bearing

Hey Evan do me a favor. Start your truck in an area with good light and look down through the belts at the Harmonic Balancer. Now focus on something on the block while looking at the Harmonic balancer and see if there is any or how much it appears to wobble. Then turn off the motor and get a good shop light under your truck and look very closely at the timing gear/chain cover and try to determine if there is any kind of a shiny ring on it.

I say this because alot of squeaks and whines are misdiagnost as belts and tensioners when they are actually Harmonic balancers.

Well I went out there and watched the rotation and it was smooth. Crawled under and no shiny spots.

I think I may have found the culprit: Power steering pump pulley

After playing with it I put the belt back on and the noise was gone:

On an unrelated note is the EGR supposed to rattle like that?

The EGR should not be making noise to the best of my knwledge. There is a pinnel sensor on the vback that reads how far the EGR is open and a vacuum line coming from a variable vacuum valve close to the EGR that regulates how far it is opening. All EGR movements should be slow and gradual.

Ok. What about the pulley? Is there supposed to be play in it like that?

I would say no to that also. I just went out and pulled back and forth on mine very hard and it had no movement.

I've read this thread and a few others on the 3G swap and none seem to cover the '91 4.9. Can anyone tell me which junkyard donor I should be looking to for a 3G alternator for this application?

91 3G?

I do not know for sure, but if it were me, I would measure at the pivot point... and then from that lower pivot point hole center line ...to the center line of the top adjuster bolt hole ... It can be 7" c to c or an 8.25" ...or even a side mount unit. Go to this web site ... RJM Injection Tech — Welcome ... and find yours and you will then know !!! Or you could go to your favorite parts house that likes you and ask them to pull the alt spec'd for your truck and compare it to the pictures on the site. Does it have a 6 grove serp belt or 1 or 2 V-belts as far as the wiring goes, I would call RJM and ask they are helpful
Dave ... Hope that helped !!!

Just now getting back to this thread. Will finally have some time to work on the truck tomorrow so will investigate and report back.

On a related note, what is the year Ford transitioned away from the 2G to 3G alt?
