Hello everyone,
Has anyone had any experience putting toyota or other steering boxes in a 53? I don't know if I should rebuild my original box, or put something newer in. I still have the flathead v8 so I don;t know about power stuff.
Thanks
Bill
I was thinking the same thing, but parts cost is close to 500 big ones. My sector shaft is shot, so I need a new one at 295, it just seems like there would be a cheaper/better way.

Here's a repost of some info from a thread a few months old. I think you can get the stuff for a lot less than $500.

Joblot Automotive (www.joblotauto.com) is near NYC and has all the parts you need to rebuild it yourself. It's pretty straightforward if you have a shop manual - it can't be that hard if I could get it right.
I paid about $175 for all the parts below.
1 each Steering Shaft With Worm Gear B6C-3524 $94.50
1 each Replacement Roller and Pin B7C-3575-X $59.95
1 each Housing Cover Gasket 7RC-3581 $1.00
1 each Sector Shaft Housing Oil Seal 8M-3591 $2.50
1 each Gear Shift Linkage Repair Kit 01A-7354-RK $14.95
Note that this includes both of the real wear parts (worm gear and sector roller). You might need another bushing or two but they are just a buck or two each.
Bill,
I tore mine down and it ended up being less than George's total: worm gear, bearings, and a pair of seals. I really don't know why people are so afraid of these things. They are not a recirculating-ball type box (plink! oops! was that 97 or 98 *****??...).
Tear it down and take a look before passing judgement.
Good Luck!
Brett
Welcome to FTE Bill. Are you going to go power steering or leave it manual? I think that would be my first question, then if manual, go ahead, there are enough shop manuals here if you already don't have one and folks who have done the rebuild to help. All you need to do is ask and a flood of info will follow.
I decided to go ahead and rebuild the old box. Works great except for one thing> How do I get the adjuster screw to stop leaking oil? It has the key way in it and seems to weep a little oil everyday>
THanks

I did the toyota box on my 53 and I love it (probably cause I'm lazy). I found the box at a local yard for $65, bought the pitman arm and mounting bracket from Bob' for $195. I used a ford pump and just had a high pressure hose made with the toyota fitting on the box side for $35. Went in nice and easy, had it going in a couple hours.
My buddy was giving me a hard time for converting until he was with me and I made a 3 point turn on a one lane road...then his story changed.....

Hi Bill,
I know this is probably a little late but a lot of the cover plate holes are through-tapped. Obviously, the adjuster screw hole is as well. I found I had to use Permatex on all the screws to really stop any oil seepage. I don't recall a keyway in my adjuster screw but maybe yours is different from my 56. The permatex will probably fix even the keyway problem since you don't adjust it very often. Only problem is, to do it right you need to take that side cover off, clean up the adjuster screw and cover really well (lacquer thinner or similar solvent), apply the Permates to the threads and keyway, and reassemble.
