I was driving today in 2nd gear, and this loud whirring sound started coming from the engine... i thought it might be because I was coming close to where I shift up, so I shifted to 3rd, and it stopped for a moment, then started again, and then I lost the power steering. My little battery light came on, then the Check Engine light came on, and I was able to pull over and get off the road.
I let it sit for a few minutes, then turned the truck over to see if she'd start, and she did, but a few seconds later the noises started again, so I got out of the truck and popped the hood. The truck kept running, it didnt quit again while I checked it, but when I popped the hood, the noise was really loud, and there was some sort of burning smell... I closed the hood, locked up my truck, walked home, and here I am.
Anyone have any ideas on what it could possibly be?
I checked the belt, and its still there, and looks straight and connected to everyplace it should, but I'm not completely car savvy
I ran my hand along as far as I could reach, and its all there & none is really loose or hanging off... I started the truck up again, and ran it for 10-15 seconds before turning off, and noticed smoke from heat rising off the belt, so theres a good chance that's it...
I've got a family member thats a mechanic about 100 miles away, and he believes something's locked up, so I may try to tow it there... hmm
Are you car savvy enough to get the belt off? Anything that belt touches (except the crankshaft pulley) should be able to turn by hand. The A/C compressor (if you have it) will spin relatively freely until it reaches it compression stroke. The alternator and water pump should spin with little resistance. I'm not sure about the power steering pump, but I would expect it to spin fairly easily as well. There's also the tensioner pulley which should be able to spin easily as well.
