Not a bad idea.
Another option would be one from a suburban.
Here is what I plan on going with:
I dont know what its from though.

I really like the kit that I set the link to before as it is a A/C and heater but it just has the 4 vents in the front of it which means there isn't a way to run duct up to the defrost for the windshield. So I think that would mean I would need to keep my original heater as it has the duct/hose that runs up to defrost the windshield. The original heater worked great and would burn me out of the truck going to work on a cold day.
I asked a question about the that kit on ebay and after he asnwered my question the guy offered it to me for even lower price...MAN! I wish I had something to sell to go ahead and buy it but you guys know how that goes LOL

Hello Reed,
I know the width of a 53-56 is a little wider than an F1 but I swapped out this OLD AIR Unit
for this Underdash AC unit.
Put the stock heater with defrost back in and the setup works good. The unit you posted looks like it should do wonders in your cab. This unit cools my cab very well and my cab is not LEXUS car airtight by any means. I wish you the best in getting AC in your cab. It helps make the driving more pleasurable.

Thanks tacson, that's what I'm gonna wind up doin then. It really helps when you guys post pics and discuss what y'all have tried I really appreciate it! Driving my truck as much as possible is my goal when it is done/drivable and an A/C setup will help that out tremendously.

Too bad I'm nowhere near needing this.

Hey Reed,
I think the Vintage Air price for our '48-'52 trucks is higher
than that $1,300 number. I used their "mini" option - stupidly expensive.
It's also overkill with our cab size - the lowest setting will freeze important
body parts. There has to be a good salvage A/C solution - It's amazing all the effort put into the different salvage front end solutions. The aftermarket A/C stuff is the same price as decent IFS.
Good luck over there Reed - A/C isn't optional in Texas.

I am going to run my compressor, so I can get a drive belt easily. I am subscribed on this one. I would like to come up with a reasonable solution also. I would think (there I go again) that you could utilize a system from a salvage yard, but I am far from needing this. I see it as "NOT AN OPTION" I will have a/c in mine. and it won't be no $1300 dollar setup.
Some of these under dash units look like a pretty easy solution though.
Back in 1989, I worked for U_HAUL as a Mobile Repair Unit. They set me up in a '78-'79 F-350 14' box truck. it was all decked out like a mobile garage. Anyay, it had an underdash unit. It looked really cheesy to me at first glance, but it froze you out!
I took a college course on a/c (before R-134a) because I knew nothing about it. Well I still don't know alot, but at least I can recharge my own a/c and not worry about a can blowing up in my hands.
At least they have different connections for the hi/low sides now.
I still wrap the cans with a an old towel for safety.
when I took the a/c class, they showed some nasty videos of freon cans blowing up, they were connected to the hi pressure side. Not good at all..
