I was just curious if anyone had swapped a later 5 speed in place of a t-19 or knew if it was a feasible thing to do. If so, what trans is best and what kind of fabrication and parts are needed.
Thanks for any input.
You can almost bolt-in a Mazda M5OD-R2 or a ZF S5-42 from a later smallblock (4.9L/5.0L/5.8L). The Mazda is a little cheaper, but the ZF is MUCH stronger and has a granny 1st.
The mazda one is a ranger trans isn't it? I think thats what my brother's ranger has. Also are the bellhousing bolt patterns the same for big and small blocks? I have a 460. Also what about the transfer case, would I be able to retain my stock transfer case? Thanks for the reply.
Well, the M5OD is definatley out for you, they didn't build it in the BBF bellhousing pattern. For a Ford tranny, the ZF is your only viable option.
And, yes, you will be able to keep your stock transfer case, and, if my buddy's 88 F350 is any indication(just did the oppisite swap as his ZF was dead), the stock driveshafts won't need to be modified if you go to a ZF.
Good Luck
