Some help please....

Finally getting started on my dad's 64 F100. I have decided to use the 302 out of a 94 Mustang I have here on the shelf. My question is, I need an intake, carb, mild cam and distributor/ignition set up.
Has swapped one of these over? (EFI to Carb). Anyone done this same engine in somewhat the same truck. The F100 will have a C6 behind it, and I have not decided on rear end gears, nothing to radical though. I dont need a huge cam, just something to get it up and go, looking to make around 300 horsies. Would also like to get around 18mpg as dad wont drive it if it dont get decent mileage.
Thanx in advance.
This will be my first swap, but I have done many head gaskets and intakes, but I really need to know what to get for the right set up the first time so everything works together not against.

No need for a cam change the stock HO cam is pretty good and reportedly works quite well(produces good power) with a carb and also returns decent milage when you're not on the hammer... .though 18mpg in a truck with a 3spd trans will require 3.00 axle gearing, and even then you may be stretching your luck.

Ok, so good on the cam then. I know 18 mpg is a stretch, but since I will be filling it up for him, it just needs to be close.
What size carb then? I just plan on running shorty headers.
if this thing only had 2 cylinders, I wouldnt have all these questions.

A 600cfm vac secondary will do the trick, that will give it good low rpm response and still let it breath on the topend.

Are they factory shorty headers ?

I have only seen half a dozen factory shorties but those were misleading as they were very restrictive with small openings . Cheap mass production in my opinion and would not flow much better if any over cast iron manifolds .

Maybe I am missing something or just saw a few of the exceptions ?

300 HP at the flywheel is achievable with the stock cam. A performer, performer RPM or performer RPM air-gap. I would recommend long tube headers for more than one reason. I'm no expert on carbs so I'll pass on that.

The transmission is notorious for robbing horsepower, any chance you could get a C4 or better yet a AOD? With the overdrive you can have gears and mileage.
