Difference between Dana 60 & 70
Does anyone know the physical difference between the two?? I have a 1975 F350 that Im doing a 4x4 conversion on and the donor trucks rearend is a Dana 60 but it has smaller brakes and the rear hub is shorter. Could mine be a 70???

The dana 60 has a number 60 stamped in the housing while a 70 has a number 70 stamped into the housing. Also, (I may be wrong on this) the dana 70 has 35 spline axles only, while the dana 60 can have other configurations (30, 32, 35 spline or something similiar)

Correct. The Dana 70 axle is a 35 spline measuring at 1.50" at diameter. The Dana 60s went all the way down to a 19 spline with the 35 spliners being very rare. I forget a 60s diameter...wanna say 1.33 but that just popped into my head so it may be totally wrong...it IS smaller than the 70s axle though. It will have either the 60 or 70 raised on the housing. The 70u's had more clearance, but otherwise the same beast. The rear end in your 350 is most likely a D70, if its not a sterling, which you'll want to keep if it is. I can break 60's all day but 70's are as tough as they come...unless you have a rockwell laying around
