DANA 60

got my dana 60 on the way. was wondering what i should all do to it before it goes in. was thinking kingpin rebuild brakes and what not. plan on swapping out the rear 60 for a 14 bolt with a locker. truck mostly runs 285s so i was thinking 4.11s would be good with a 203 range box on the back of the 205 for a little deeper gearing. or should i just go with 4.56s and be done with it. was thinkin of new springs also what brand and how tall its just a work truck i still want to pull a trailer when i need to. no interstate driving or high speed stuff just crawling around on the farm. what im after is to build this right and once. like john kinsenbaw says when in dout build it sout. thanks for the help and info.

I'm cheap... id buy the 14 bolt and see what gears are in it and match the d60 to that.. then you're only doing gears once.

Tell us more about what you are doing, what model dana 60 you have, and what truck this is going under.

I would change the seals in it, make sure the kingpins are in good order, repack bearings. And bolt er' in.

I would not waste time and money with a doubler setup for a work truck with 285s. Doublers are really just more cool than they are practical. I have driven vehicles with them, but with any good V8 that has good low end, they are really not needed. I would spend the money else where, like upgrading yokes and u joints to 1350 series or 1410, and installing disk brakes, and upgrading the master cylinder etc....

Post some pictures of your stuff. We'd like to see it.

with what your saying for usage-slap that 60 in there and run it.
bring her up to farm standards: it wont leave you a mile from the house/shop/barn out in a field or stuck in a ditch. can stop. drag a trailer around with a bunch of heavy stuff on it. able to yank on stuck equipment, pull out the local town kids stuck in your ditch kinda truck. heck you already have it.

off topic:
i got stuck bad wheeling a few miles from the ranch, my brother in law is in his turbo scout. instead of getting his ford we tried with the little guy. all bad (those little slant 4's hold alot of coolant). now we were walking. his f250 or yours for that matter would have pulled me without issue

i've tried to kill my highboy several times-short of full blown jumping it- and she just takes it.

my .02

ya but i have had it stuck. tow round bales on the back spun out on the ice on a big hill slid all the way back down backwards sideways into a big ditch. i could still move but not get enough wheel spin to get out. thats why i want that locker.

if she just sees the farm, you could always zap the rear end or spool it.
