Do I need a special tool to get the gas lines apart on a 1990 F150 300 6 cylinder. I am in the process of swapping motors and the gas lines are a little different. I am talking about the little round disc like connector that looks like it has a safety clip on it??? Can someone tell me how to get these apart??? Thanks
Yeah, you do need a special tool. They're available at most parts stores. A package of 4 different sizes runs about $10. Instructions on how to use them are usually included.
Boris,
I bought the special tool from NAPA (also sold at sears) that looks like a pair of metal scissors. It comes sold in a pack of two hinged metal tools (shaped like an X when they are open) that fit four different sizes of rings for the quick release. I had a terrible time using these and could not get one of my quick release rings to open on my fuel line! I ended up with many bruised knuckles, a bent tool, and the job still not done!!!! I ended up taking it to the corner gas station where the tech had a snap-on tool that looked like a pair of pliers that got the job done.
I have seen a set that looks like many plastic rings that you insert in the line. I think that this would work better. Sears also sells these.
I found mine at the local discount auto place for 7 bucks or so. It is a one piece plastic circle with a shoudler that you slip over the fuel line and then press them in and go. Did you depressurize the system when you did it?
