I had my truck serviced yesterday and the air filter was awful. (I live in the sand and have owned truck for 6 months) Had no idea really that thing needed to be changed very often. (woman here) Four parts stores and a stealership did not have my filter plus it's $118 so I thought I'd just up myself to a cold air intake while I was dishing out money. What's the best one for power and performance?
2001 X 4x4 7.3L Thanks.
I am looking at the ais myself as I have to get my X smogged. Go to partsguyed.com and click on the black truck. You will see it listed there. Ed is a site sponsor.
I live 10 miles down a dirt road in the high-desert of Nevada....dust/dirt everywhere. Put in the AIS setup and you will never again worry about ingesting that crap. Here is the link to the AIS...
I googled AIS cold air intake and nothing comes up?
The Ford AIS (or sever duty intake) is an awesome filter set up for a 7.3. It is a little spendy but the filter stops more crap than the stock intake or even the famous 6637. The filters are made by donaldson and similar filters are used on the 6.0 and the new D'Maxes. If I had the extra cash at the time I would have gone for the AIS but for my environment (suburbia, south of Boston) an AIS is over kill.
Clay at Riffraff Diesel sells them. Look on his site. They are great. One guy on here puts out over 450HP and runs that setup so flow shouldn't be a problem. Do you have the stock filter. Why 108.oo for stock filter.
HAHAHA that's the one that's ON my truck NOW! That's a cold air intake and is ALREADY giving me improved performance? The filter is $118!!!!! I thought cold air intakes didn't have filters that you had to change out?

Those AIS replacement filters can be bought for $60 or so when they are on sale. If you had no filter on your truck, you be buying turbos on a regular basis (not even mentioning block wear and oil contamination). High quality air filtration is critical on diesels.
So this is a cold air intake? Or is it just a better Ford filter? Where abouts can I get it for $60? RiffRaff seemed to have it for $70 something. I guess I'll need to keep atleast 1 extra at all times since my town doesn't seem to stock the thing.
The one (I) saw for the 50$ range was an after market filter(not blue) not sure of a quality difference? I have seen many in the $70 area. Riffraff is a great place to order from. I rather spend a few dollars extra to support a man and his family rather than a big corporation.

You have to look around...they come on sale every year. I buy two so I have more than a year to find another pair at a decent price. Remember, AIS element easily lasts 40k miles. I have my AIS opened up in the front of my truck....lookup zoodad mod.
Riggers, the AIS is a cold air intake. The filters can be had for $65-70 if you look in the right place. Diesel-filters.com has them for $62.09 right now...and not on sale. You have a very good filter system in the AIS. I have the AIS, and I am really impressed with it. Filter does not need to be changed very often, and it is easy to clean (extend the life without buying a new one) by blowing it out or tapping it on a hard surface. It is a high flow filter - See the quote below.
"Donaldson did the comparison flow testing. They tested the flow through their entire AIS kit as they sell it (or as Ford dealers sell it), and they tested their B085011 filter alone hooked up to the flow test equipment. And the flow through the Power Core filter installed in the AIS housing, plastic housing and all, showed 8.3" of restriction at 500 CFM flow. The flow through the B085011 filter alone, hooked directly up to the test equipment (ie. - open to airflow all the way around the filter) showed 10" of restriction at the same 500 CFM flow. This is how Jordan explained it to me, and this is why I am replacing my Tymar with the AIS."
