I recently bought a 1961 f100 and have been driving it daily for about 2 weeks now. When I filled up for the first time I calculated that i got about 7 miles per gallon. Is this about what you guys are getting in your trucks? The truck has a rebuilt 302 out of an 86 mustang LX, 500 cfm edlerbrock carb and AOD transmission out of the same mustang. The rear end is stock to the 2 wheel drive truck. I thought I would be getting at least over 10 mpg.
If this is not normal what kind of things should i be looking at to improve this? I am very new too classic car and trucks so any help would be greatly appreciated.
With my 240 I-6, I get about 12mpg regardless of the conditions. (For those who saw my earlier post about 9mpg. I realigned the front end, and the handling is much better, and the mileage went up too, because I am not snow plowing and destroying the front tires. )
7 miles per gallon does seem a bit high? with the 302 and AOD trans'' I would think you would get around 10-12 on highway? is this engine built up for performance or just stock
with a 4V carb?
Thanks for all the ideas guys. Its a stock 5.0 that was rebuilt with after market cast pistons but other than that its stock compression cam and heads. One thing I have been having trouble with is that it will not heat up properly when im moving (it has been pretty cold) so im going to block off half of the radiator today to see if it gets up to operating temp and stays there.
I Don't have a smart phone but Im sure i can borrow one and check the speedo. Didn't think about the fact that my mileage driven could be wrong when calculating MPG lol.
I have A 64 with 292 4 speed(granny first) with 389 gears and consistently get 12 mpg. I do try to drive slower than the posted speed limit whenever I can.
Kimberton, What thermostat are you running? Are you using an electric fan?
John
I just replaced the thermostat and it was a 190 degree, also finally found the fan control and with it warming up set it to come on at 180. I'm hoping that it will be better once winter is over.
what gears are in the rear? my 65 with a 390 c6 auto and a dana with trac- lok has 3.55 gears. i get about 10 mpg when i'm wearing sneakers
I honestly don't know what the rear gears are. Its the factory 9 inch. Is there anyway for me to tell or numbers i can get off the axle?
Also should add that im getting a transmission shop to make sure it is set up properly and get it serviced. It has been shifting odd. This is the first automatic transmission i have owned so i think it might have something to do with the Mileage being off.
