My 94 F250 has an in dash factory AM/FM Cassette Stereo. Lately the tape player has been on the fritz. At first it just ate tapes and wouldn't let go without a struggle. Now it flat doesn't let go and you have to pull the tape out with forceps. Even when the tape player is empty and if the radio is on, you can hear the tape mechanism running like it is in rewind or fast forward.
I pulled the unit out yesterday and lubed a few suspicious friction points but no Luck. I also noticed that the tape carrier didn't seem to seat itself completely when pushed down and the tape head did not appear to retract properly when the cartridge carrier was in the up position.
I didn't want to go into a detailed disassembly of the tape unit without better knowledge of what I am doing.
So does anyone know how to fix the tape unit? Or can the tape unit be purchased separately and if so how much $?
i'd run down to best buy or somewhere and pickup something else. i'll sell you mine if you want to stay with the ford system. i'm getting ready to upgrade to a new system for my bronco.
I am considering an aftermarket unit but kind of like to stay with the factory systems just because of ease of installation and I know it will work fine. Besides, the family uses the truck rarely and my wife doesn't like to have the stereo too loud so I don't need a high power system and I don't want to spend a lot of money, so I don't care for the quality of the el cheapo units. I may just go down to the local junk yard and find me a facory unit to scavenge or replace.
