Needle bearing for pilot

Good afternoon group,
I just picked up a clutch kit for my 65 F-100 300/6 when I looked over the parts at home the pilot bushing is a needle bearing. Has anyone had any experience with these? good or bad just looking for information.

I think installing it will require a installation tool/driver. So you don't screw up the bearings, other than that it should not be a problem. If the bushing you have in there now is in good shape I'd leave it be and just slap in the new clutch.

never leave an old bushing in unless you installed it last week. it is way too hard to determine the amount of wear by eye and most bushings will be out of specs at 10,000 miles, imagine how far out it is by the time you need to replace a clutch! a worn bushing will cause clutch chatter and a few other undesireable traits which is why the newer style bearings are so popular. they last a lot longer and are much more forgiving. hawkrod

Thanks William for the heads up on the tool. I will check if I can make something that will seat the bearing without doing damage.

I agree with hawkrod. If you have it apart anyway better change it. If you don't, you will be doing this dance again next week/month. I have a new brass bushing, and the bearing. I am going to try the bearing. If it doesn't last very long, that is ok, as I met a gentleman yesterday that informed me he has 7 complete 289s and I am going to meet him for lunch tomorrow and discuss the terms. Thanks again for the info and have a great day!

The needle bearing is an excellent upgrade to the bushing. a sealed bearing is even better. You can install the needle bearing by using a socket of the same diameter as the bearing housing and use soft taps with a brass hammer.

back in my military days as a helicpter mechanic, we used all kind of bearing including the needle bearings. although i am sure the gov't paid 10 times what they were worth, i never found a needle bearing that failed or showed excessive wear when properly lubed at install.

not the same as a clutch bearing, but i hope it makes you feel better about them.
