I've had several stop working in many different vehicles. Check the fuse if you haven't already. A lot of times the element burns out, too. It could also be a bad ground or corroded contacts in the inside.
If you still get power to the outlet, but the element itself doesn't work, that's the problem. Cheap and easy fix from the boneyard or just get an aftermarket lighter.
Easyest fix : Stop smoking, and do what I did, take it out, put a fiberglass patch behind the hole, on the other side also, sand it down, coat it with resin, sand it again, bondo it, and fill the holes with some spot filler, sand it down one more time with some fine fine paper, and then primer it fromt to back, and tada! no more hole! it makes the dash look so much better, and if you actualy quit smoking, take out all of the parts to your ash tray (coin holder) for all of you but throwers.... and install 2 1" guages, watter temp and battery, I installed air to fuel and watter temp. its much funner then fixing a busted lighter.....
easy...... do what I did for my radar detector, buy a spliter that makes 1 lighter into 4 and mount it under the dash out of the way, or under the seat.
I don't smoke either. I just want somewhere to plug in my phone charger or anything else that needs a little 12v power. Also, if you did want to do away with it, you can get a little chrome or black plug to fill the hole with.
i fell for the old cigar lighter and blown fuse deal one time. it turned out that the last owner had replaced the fuse prior to giving me the truck. first time i tried the lighter it popped the fuse. so i pulled the old one out and purchased new fuses like the old one. that was where i made the mistake. after popping a couple more and hunting up a known good element and socket. i decided to look up the amp rating and found that i had the wrong fuse..... so i picked up the right one and viola! moral of the story, make sure you have the correctly rated fuse for the job.
Same thing with my tail lights and blinkers.... Every time I would turn and leave my blinker on for about 5 seconds it would stop working... and if I would break for more then 5 seconds I would pop the fuse.... I feel your pain..... Lucky for me my 74 had the correct fuse in it so I just took it out of there and read it and went and put in the right one.
