I have a 2002 F350 dually with a V-10 and about 92000 miles on it. In the engine compartment, on top of the drivers side fender, next to the air cleaner, is a round device. It looks like it is hooked up to the fuel system. When I turn the key on this "device" makes a growl or moaning sound.
The truck runs normal, just this strange sound. Does anyone know what it's for? Is it servicable?
Thanks for any information you have. This looks like a great site.
Could possibly be hearing the fuel pump running. The vent runs into the canister from the fuel tank. Believe it or not my 74' F-100 has the exact same setup, just with modern parts.
Yes, its the canister next to the air cleaner, in front of the power steering fluid.
I'm not to sure if it's the fuel pump,I've had the truck since 2003 and this growling noise just started a short time ago.
That canister is the evaporiate emissions control canister (or whatever you want to call it) - when you turn the key on, a solenoid opens the vent. It probably has pressure (or vacuum?) in it and when the solenoid opens, it makes noise
