Im looking for some ideas on how to get some better horsepower out of a 78 stock 400 looking for some higher rpms if possibile and also wondering if a stock mustang 5spd would bolt up? any ideas are appreciated

If you can get a bellhousing to bolt up the borg T5, itll blow up. Those things barely handle stock or slight modded 5.0s. There is other trannys that would hold up better though. Tremmec has their TKO? or 3550 I think? DOnt remember exactly, but they are heavier duty, but a 400 would push them to the extremes too if built up right. This going into a car or truck? If truck, for street racing or normal use or offroading?
probly easier and cheaper, get a 5 spd from a 90's model truck that came from behind a 460. will bolt right up. and 205's will bolt up behind them too.
75f100, i was researching putting a 5spd ZF in my 78 bronc, wich i assume is what your taliking about. But i was under the impression that the whole clutch assembly would need alot of fabrication as the position they sit are different between the 400 and 460. is this true or do you know of an easier way? just thought i would ask because I really want a heavy duty 5 speed but the only real info I got on the swap so far is just this one post: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...threadid=44122
sound minor to me it is not like you have a whole new shaft cut for it just a little fab work to keep the bearing on
couple knotches and the drive shafts stay the same (i think)

If your bronco has a 400M or 460 the bolt pattern is the same for that tranny the difference is that this tranny has a hydraulic clutch slave cylinder and your 78 isnt i know for a 1980 you can remove the hole clutch assembley pedel and all and pretty much bolt it in too your truck but 78 im not sure i had an issue of four wheeler that had a bronco with fuel injected 460 and a zf five speed you might be able to ask them how he did it

Ok that makes sense. 75f100... that could be as the article I was reading they were keeping there manual clutch i beleive. Perhaps switching the whole hydraulic clutch onto the 78 would solve all that... unless there are other problems swapping a hydraulic clutch onto a 78 that didnt come with them?
My truck is currently c6 auto so everything down to the pedal would have to be put in. but it something I am serious about once I get the money. I am trying to make an efficient yet strong combination using a fuel injected 351M with aussie heads and the 5 speed. With everything I have researched, I am looking at around 300Hp figures and 15mpg (or possibly more) with a lift and 37's. All in all if it comes true it will have almost double the power of my 99 v6 f150 and better milleage! Not to mention the lift and off roading capabilities of 37's!
I havent set anything in stone yet (not even sure how I am gonna afford it at all ) but the system I have been looking at is the holley comander 950 tbi unit (pro-jection i think its called in another catalog).
I have never seen a multi-port manifold for the M-block so I was assuming that I had to go with a tbi unit. But then I did see a universal one that included weld in fuel injector bungs. Not sure if I could convert a manifold like the edelbrock performer into multi fuel injection. But it will cost alot more. Maybe I should start a new post about the advantages / disadvantages or wether or not its even possible for the M-block.
well can you get vortec's computer wiring injectors and such not
and either mod a intake or fab one
sure they are VERY expensive
but hey am sure it can be done if you find something with the same firing order to control the pulses properly
can't remember if the 9th inector is for idle or
most likely boost think with a nitro fogger gounds like a kick
as for a fab'ed intake a 3>2 inch cone finned interally(horizontal)
as to if the fins spin the air c/w the drivers side bank would be mounted on the top(angled) pass on btm like an s shape
sounds like this would, with a HUGE mass air sensor would pressurize the runners
hey people do sheetmetal intakes why not for injection
First off I apologize for going off the original topic here... just wanted to answer these questions. The holley fuel injection kit (commander 950 TBI) is like $1399 brand new from Summit Racing. You might be able to find one on ebay as others had for a few hundred dollars. As for milleage I said 15 not 17 but on highway I am hoping it would be closer to 17 but I dont try to get my hopes set too high . I am just going by what I have discussed here with others. I could give you all the details, but since the private message system is disabled I can't seem to get any of those messages so they are all lost . But from memory, this guy built several 400's, the last two had the holley pro-jection kit and he got 15mpg out of both a bronco and I think the other was an f-250. The truck had 38's or so (dont remember the exact size but they were big) with 4.10 gears and the bronco had 35's and 3.50 gears. He said it had plenty of power, could spin the big tires easy, and said the only time it got less than 14mpg when he had a loaded trailer going through the mountains. Remember thats also with a c6 and a 400. I was going to try to make a high performance 351 that had close to 2 points higher compression, so it should get better milleage. Plus if I put in a 5 speed ZF it should be better by that account also. And I will keep similar drive ratios - I plan on 37x12.50's and around 4.10 gearing. Remember, these are just the plans, and lots of things change by the time the last wrench is turned... plus there is that whole money issue
But I have no idea how this compares to a 460 as my research has all been on the M-block motor (although I do have an extra 460).
BTW, since this post is getting long and off the original topic if anyone else wants to chat about it I can be reached with the email link in my profile.
